My name is Julia Maynard, and I am a Social Science Researcher.

I focus on survey research, quantitative text analysis, and program management.

I am currently at YouGov working on survey research.

Selected Work:

Shows the predicted probability of someone voting UKIP based on their perceived strategy of the Conservative Party on Immigration

Uses survey data to understand voter behavior.

Voter perceptions of a party’s strategy matter most for vote choice. Voters who think the Conservative Party will not reduce immigration are more likely to vote UKIP, regardless of demographic characteristics.

Creates Guidelines on how to use social media data for research purposes.

Social media platforms are used differently by different people, in different countries, and at different times, but existing work generally treats these platforms as interchangeable. I create guidelines on how to use social media data to do research better.

Different institutions create different behavioral constraints, which affects communication.

Looking at the case of Germany, which has two different electoral systems, politicians elected by one system communicate differently than politicians elected by another system. These politicians communicate with their voters based on the constraints they face (i.e. the electoral system). This result holds even when using matching on observables as the electoral system is not randomly assigned.
